I-Scapes (IMAGINARY TIMESCAPES) represent mysterious places and states of mind that exist somewhere beyond the ordinary conscious world. Humans, animals, or their sprits may have recently passed within their borders.

The seeds for these images come from a variety of sources. Some may have been planted while leafing through my grandmother's old magazines from the 1940's, staining my unconscious in black and white. Others come from futuristic outer space adventures seen in movies or visualized from books. Many of the places depicted in these I-Scapes have been dug out of my own youthful experience. They often reflect my interest in history, and so are saturated with ruins old cultures left behind.

As these flickering "timescapes" tumble from my reservoir of memories, I recreate them in my studio. The process of building these private installations allows me to explore a variety of media. I sculpt pieces and paint props and backgrounds. I also gather and reassemble found objects. The hands-on, tactile part of the process is particularly satisfying.

The last stage is purely photographic. Basic techniques such as light painting, time exposure, focus, and filtration allow me to modify and even transform my constructed piece. It is important to note that these images are not digitally manipulated.

Pulled from my own memories, dreams, experiences, and knowledge the resulting I-Scapes are my impression of places and events -- and the feelings they evoke. Yet I leave enough unsaid that viewers can explore them through their own lens and imagine storylines of their own.
